The Dream

Today CJ, Jo and I went to IKEA.  Exciting eh? Actually IKEA is always a bit of an exciting experience for us teuchters from Lewis.

But on the way we went to see Dream.  Dream takes the form of a 20 metre high girl's head with her eyes closed, seemingly in a dream-like state, resting on a plinth bearing the inscription "Dream Sutton Manor" inspired by the small, circular "tally" each miner carried as a means of identification. The notion is simple but profound, for in the words of Jaume Plensa's own words "in our dreams, anything is possible...".

The story of the sculpture can be read on the website Dream.

My impression was one of awe at the size and beauty of the sculpture.  It was, apparently, controversial.  Why it should have been I cannot comprehend.

  1. Wow...the first photo, with the background colors as they are, made it look almost unreal. It looks sort of ghost-ish.

    That is a LARGE sculpture.

Glad you shared it with us :)

  2. Wow. That is HUGE. I've seen some pretty impressive statues (you might remember a head sticking up out of a river that I showed on Soaring earlier in the summer) but Dream certainly beats them all...

You know IKEA is Swedish, right? ;)

  3. It is a bit ghost-ish in a funny sort of way. I found it very moving indeed. And VERY big.

Yes, Monica, I did know it was Swedish. With product names like Karlskrona and Tylosand how could it be anything else? I've been a devotee of IKEA for many many years.

  4. And, Yes Monica, I did remember the head. It was one of the first postings of yours that I can recall and it made a big impression because when I first saw it I had no concept of its size.

  5. Oh my goodness she is awesome. I would love to see her. Can you touch her or is that forbidden? Being a very tactile person that would be just wonderful. xx

  6. Oh yes you can touch her no problem. Trying to give her a hug might be. It would probably take me half a minute to walk round her. My arms would certainly be a bit short for a hug!

  7. That is fantastic! It reminds me of some futuristic sculpture from a movie, only better!

  8. Aaah Ikea!! I was assembling one of their wardrobes only a couple of hours ago :-)

Hope you had fun and didn't get too tired. I don't know how big the one near/on the Wirral is, but the one in Bristol is so large that I've always been exhausted before reaching the exit!

  9. Wow! That is awe inspiring. Not just the sculpture but the story behind it too. Who would have thought miners would have gone for such a concept? I would have put money on them choosing a lamp of some description. Thanks for providing the link as well as the photo.

  10. GB, you have an excellent memory. (Well, a lot better than a goldfish's anyway...) Sculpture week was the first week I joined the Soaring blog. :)
